The fifth week of the first round of the Primary Level of the National Bible Bee Game Show ended with two contestants again running away from the competition. After E.Z. Swayne shared a favorite quote from the reformer Martin Luther, contestants dove into questions about the two characters who walked with God and the songs sung in Revelation 15:3-4. From the opening answer, Chelsea Crawford ran away with the first semi-final spot, while Theodora Brown kept as close to her as she could.
In this opening round, four young people challenged themselves and each other with the 183 Bible passages and 700 verses they had memorized. In front of a panel including former pro athlete and entrepreneur David Benham, former Bible Bee Game Show winner Hannah Leary, and Living Waters Ministries president Emeal (“E.Z.”) Zwayne, they worked to show what they had learned about the Bible in this week's episode. Initially, each of the contestants could earn points for buzzing in during Bible Knowledge Buzzer Round, choosing the correct multiple choice answer to questions before tackling memorization and trivia, as well as recitation of longer passages.
This week, the contestants were:
Christian Hurlin of Mico, TX, builds LEGO and plays the guitar, when he’s not cutting trails in the bushes around his house. He uses repetition to memorize Scripture like Hebrews 13:5, which reminds him that he’s never without a friend. He admires Daniel’s bravery.
Theodora Brown of New Castle, PA, rides her bike when she can, and memorizes Scripture with her mom’s help. Her favorite verse is Ephesians 2:8, which reminds her how we can all be saved and how her parents picked her name. She wants to go wherever God sends her, and hopes to be a nurse.
David Thevatheril of Naperville, IL, plays the Wii and soccer, as a defender. He says his parents have dragged him to “too many” National Parks. He uses Scripture Typer to memorize Scripture, like his favorite verse, Romans 1:16, that reminds him to be courageous about Jesus and the Word of God, like his role models Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego . He hopes to be a missionary to the poor children of Africa.
Chelsea Crawford of Houston, TX, loves to read and collect coins. She also plays the piano. She uses Scripture Typer to memorize Scripture like her favorite chapter of Psalms, 103, and admires Queen Esther for her bravery. She hopes to be a doctor or veterinarian.
