"How much dew was on the fleece the first time that Gideon put out the fleece?"
With that, the first semi-final round of the National Bible Bee Game Show was underway, as four teenagers set out to win one spot in the finals. Competing for a chance at $100,000, these teens competed in front of emcee Kirk Cameron and hosts Hannah Leary, Jason Benham, and David Benham, showing off some of the 850 verses that each of them memorized. But this week, only one would advance.
The hosts: The Benham twins previously played minor league baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, published two books, Whatever the Cost and Living Among Lions, co-hosted Flip It Forward, and now run BENHAM Real Estate Group in Charlotte, NC. The two men bookended the third judge, last year’s National Bible Bee Game Show winner, Hannah Leary.
Here is a brief look at each of this week’s contestants:
Hannah del Toro of Smithville, TX, is a sixteen-year-old who runs the triathlon and speaks fondly of her Chihuahua, Cookie Dough. Her favorite verse is John 12:25 and she recited a passage from the same gospel, John 6:47-58, in the Bible Recitation Round. Some day, she hopes to share the gospel in Russia or a large city.
Nathaniel Schweitzer of Pittsburgh, PA, is a seventeen-year-old who learned to trust God's forgiveness at age thirteen. He recited Revelation 21:1-8 and says his favorite verse is Colossians 3:17. He finds inspiration in the example of Paul in I Thessalonians 2. When he's able to, he enjoys playing paintball.
Kaitlyn Renfer of Ferndale, CA, is an eighteen-year-old who was adopted, with her two sisters, from China at age two. She cited Philippians 3:7-11 as inspirational, and recited Psalm 19. She fondly remembers a family trip to the National Parks: Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier.
Denver Bontrager of Kalona, IA, is a sixteen-year-old who enjoys hunting and trapping foxes, raccoons, and coyotes - and once rode a cow! He recited Galatians 5:13-26 and cited Philippians 3:13-14 as an inspiration. Peter inspires him Biblically, but Winston Churchill is his role model.
The first semi-finalist to move on to the finals is Hannah del Toro.
