Chariots of Fire

One of the most inspiring films of all time!

The inspiring true story of two runners from the United Kingdom, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell. Contrasting the spiritual motives of one man versus the more selfish goals of the other, their fierce, personal competition ends up uniting them in a great victory in the 1924 Olympics.

The come-from-behind winner of the 1981 Oscar for best picture, Chariots of Fire either strikes you as either a cold exercise in mechanical manipulation or as a tale of true determination and inspiration. The heroes are an unlikely pair of young athletes who ran for Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympics: devout Protestant Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a divinity student whose running makes him feel closer to God, and Jewish Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), a highly competitive Cambridge student who has to surmount the institutional hurdles of class prejudice and anti-Semitism. There's delicious support from Ian Holm (as Abrahams's coach) and John Gielgud and Lindsay Anderson as a couple of Cambridge fogies.

Vangelis's soaring synthesized score, which seemed to be everywhere in the early 1980s, also won an Oscar. Chariots of Fire was the debut film of British television commercial director Hugh Hudson (Greystoke) and was produced by David Puttnam.

This movie packs such an impact! We see the contrast in the lives of these young men: one who knows his God and knows his identity and worth in Him, while the other who is one who is Jewish but doesn't know Him personally, strives and struggles with his worth and is driven to prove himself. It is a precious account which is clean and well filmed! Jewel!

This is one great movie and testimony. While we many Christians today do not treat Sunday as the sabbath, the young man in this true story did. Thus the lesson to be learned is to follow your conscience and do what is right and trust God with the results. While there are few swear words in it, I could hardly catch them to know for sure they were said and it was not those playing parts of Christians who used them.

I'm extremely disappointed with the movie. The movie contains several cuss words and takes God's name in vain on many occassions. On one hand you can really feel the love and devotion for God from the character Eric Liddel, but because of the profanity in the movie I cannot recommend it. I am also disappointed in Christian for even having a movie that has profanity in it on their website that boasts Christian family friendly movies. Because of this recent experience I am now leary of renting future movies for fear of them not being profanity free.
