Crossroads (Double Feature)
A teenage Michael Landon (Bonanza) and a priestly Vincent Price play a rebellious boxer and a faith-healing preacher respectively in a pair of inspiring CROSSROADS TV shows.
CROSSROADS is a distinguished 1956 religious TV anthology series that didn't promote or focus on any specific religion. Instead, it alternated stories among Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths. Every episode begins with this opening narration: "Each Crossroads' story is based on the actual experience of American clergymen; pastor, priest or rabbi. The men who give inspiration and guidance to the people at the Crossroads of life." The first season was broadcast on Friday nights on ABC-TV following The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. The competition included Our Miss Brooks on CBS, and The Life of Riley on NBC. A blatantly religious program on a major American TV network in prime time was bold programming by ABC at the time. The series was cancelled after just one season but continued in syndication another year for a total of 78 episodes.
Gospel Films Archive is pleased to begin releasing original episodes of this superb and uplifting 1950s series in double doses beginning with this pair of compelling CROSSROADS stories:
Ringside Padre (1956)
Msgr. Harold Engle (Stephen McNally), director of the Catholic Youth Organization in New York City, is outraged at the disfigurements of teenage boxers. He begins a crusade to make it illegal for a fighter to turn professional until he reaches 18. In this true story that inspired Engle’s work, a teenage Michael Landon portrays rebellious Johnny Rico, whose dad (Leo Penn; Sean's dad) wants to bolster Johnny beyond amateur status to pro status and promote him across the boxing circuit as “The Holy Terror.”
God's Healing (1956)
Vincent Price portrays Reverend Alfred Price, a priest devoted to helping others through the powers of prayer. Here he is determined to heal the breach between an invalid mother (Frieda Inescort), whose bitterness toward her estranged pregnant daughter is stifling her own physical healing. This was the third CROSSROADS episode in which Price appeared.
