Hi friends, My Bible study group met at my friend Tamelin’s house for a couple of years. She lived on the northwest side of town, near a new housing development. There were open fields on one side of her house and walnut orchards on another. The beauty of California’s lush San Joaquin Valley surrounded her neighborhood. One evening I noticed that some of the trees were gone from the orchard. Soon, the field was leveled to make way for a new school. All around us, progress and a growing population are taking over rich agricultural lands. On the surface (pun intended), Evan Almighty is a modern-day adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. God (Morgan Freeman) appears to Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell), a brand-new Congressman. Evan wants to impact the nation through his work on Capitol Hill. God wants him to build an ark to escape the coming flood. Where the Biblical story is a warning about man’s inclination to turn away from God, Evan Almighty is a plea for better stewardship of natural resources. As animals appeared two by two, several of them helped Evan and his sons construct the ark, which created some very funny scenes. Probably the best recommendation I heard came from a friend. He said, “It was a movie I enjoyed watching with my family.” If you haven’t seen Evan Almighty, get a copy today. Its definitely not the Biblical account (more of an allegory) , but Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of an approachable God who gently shares his wisdom is a good reminder that our Father is above all loving and compassionate. A comedy of biblical proportions In this sequel to Bruce Almighty, newscaster Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell, The Office) has traded in the news desk for a post in Washington as a congressman. Though his campaign was based on the idea of changing the world, Evan drives a gas-guzzling SUV and spends more time trimming his nose hair than with his three sons. When he has a strange encounter with God (Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, reprising his role from the first film), God tells him to build an ark, just as Noah did thousands of years ago. Though Evan is skeptical, he finally accepts the task after being hounded by dozens of animals that follow him, two by two. By obeying God, Evan risks his family, career, and sanity--but will a flood actually come and prove him right? Evan Almighty is a pure family affair. Its predecessor featured some sexual humor, but this is a squeaky clean film that kids and parents can enjoy equally. Evan Almighty also features the talents of Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) and John Goodman, but the funniest lines and delivery come from Wanda Sykes and Jonah Hill as members of Evan's staff. Most of the film's jokes garner giggles, but the lines from this pair get guffaws. Special Features:
