Florence Nightingale
2009 140 Minutes
Emmy® Award-winning director Daryl Duke (TV's "The Thorn Birds") and Emmy® Award-winning writer Rose Leiman Goldemberg (TV's "The Burning Bed") bring this classic TV movie to DVD starring Jaclyn Smith and Timothy Dalton.
This stirring drama is based on the life of Florence Nightingale, an aristocratic woman who defied Victorian society to reform hospital sanitation and to define the nursing profession as it is known today. After volunteering to travel to Scutari to care for the wounded soldiers of the Crimean war, she was scorned by her community and faced great opposition for her new way of thinking. However, through her selfless acts of caring, she quickly became known as "The Lady with the Lamp", the caring nurse whose shadow softened those wounded.

Prior to viewing the movie I read her biography in a book entitled Inspiring Women of the Faith by Barbour Publishing. The movie was very close to her true story. Overall I believe it showed a good depiction of the conditions and adversities Florence Nightingale went through. I did, however, think the movie had a lot of romantic drama to it.

Our family loved this movie. It shows how God works all things for good. It also shows how He "calls" certain people to do His work. All of us are "called" to be merciful just like Florence Nightingale, and will be blessed if we do.

Wonderful movie, very well done. Sad to see the heartache and suffering caused by ignorance and traditions in the medical field but very encouraging to see what one dedicated woman accomplised through her obedience to answer God's call and sacrifice another life of happiness she could have had.
Highly recommend it.

I found this to be a very entertaining movie with some history I did not know about.

We thought this was an excellent movie and helped us understand a great deal about the person of Florence Nightingale. Recommended to all.
