Amenities. Surprisingly, I heard someone use that word in describing a church they had chosen to attend. I understood that the individual was referring to the different ministries the church had to offer, but I was also reminded of the big difference between a fishing boat and a cruise liner.

In His last words to His followers, Jesus commanded them to “go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19). In short, He has called us all to be fishers of men. Without question, the life of a believer is fulfilling. But we miss the heart of the gospel when we make our commitments based on how much something has to offer us or whether it fits our needs.

As a pastor, I get interesting responses from people when they discover my vocation. Some will immediately apologize for the language they’ve used. Some offer a forced smile and then come up with an excuse to change the subject. One line I hear often is: “Well, I like Jesus, but I don’t like religion.”

I understand the sentiment. People are leery of the church and religion because they believe the church to be greedy or fear-mongering or unloving. And it’s true that believers in Jesus have in fact sometimes exhibited those things. We have too often not lived up to our name and followed the way of Jesus.

Laughing on Purpose, a DVD by comedian Michael, Jr., was perfect for a night with my best friend. We put on Toy Story 3 for the mountain of children in the living room and disappeared into a nook to watch a comedy show for "us big girls." The first ten minutes weren't nearly as funny as the people laughing on the video thought. But we thought they must have spliced that laughter in from another part of the show, and just kept watching. Just about the time we began to appreciate his dry, literal style of humor, he got warmed up and we were laughing the rest of the hour.
