This acclaimed film traces the relationship between a death-row inmate and the local nun to whom he turns for spiritual guidance in the days leading up to his scheduled execution. Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) has been convicted of the rape and murder of two young lovers and is awaiting execution. Susan Sarandon plays Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who has devoted herself to God and to helping the less fortunate. Prejean faces a moral crisis as she tries to reconcile her anti-death penalty views with the truth of Poncelet’s actions and the pain felt by the victim’s families. This fascinating and powerful drama explores the relationship between a condemned young convict and the nun who counsels him in the days leading up to his execution. Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) is on death row after being convicted of raping and brutally murdering a young couple. He writes to Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon) for help, asking her to visit him in prison. She agrees to act as his spiritual adviser and begins to spend time each day with him. Prejean, who strongly opposes capital punishment, attempts to get Poncelet's death sentence rescinded. First, however, she tries to save Poncelet's soul by getting him to face up to his guilt and ask forgiveness for his actions. Based on the real-life experiences of Sister Helen Prejean, the film shows the horrors of state-sanctioned executions while also dealing sympathetically with the grief felt by the families of the two murder victims. Sarandon and Penn turn in top-notch performances in this award-winning film written, directed, and produced by Tim Robbins (BOB ROBERTS, CRADLE WILL ROCK). Latest Reviews for Dead Man Walking - DVD(no written review given) Ironically this movie should have been a Christian movie but Hollywood wouldn't allow that to happen. As a Christian movie this would have been amazing. Without God in this movie it is simply a movie against the death penalty. (no written review given) The movie was inspiring, it help confirm that God is truly a forgiving God. I would recommend this movie. I didn't like this movie at all. I'm surprised it is offered by ChristianCinema.com I had watched this movie because I had heard about the book (followed about the true story of the nun, Sister Prejean who the story is actually written about) & this movie is a normal movie & has nothing of a christian basis to it at all... only that it has a nun in it & she tries to help a man in prison. There is alot of material in this movie (believe the movie was rated R?) like violence & foul talk/swearing & I think maybe even some nudity & this kind of movie shouldn't even be offered on a christian site. I thought that this movie was overall pretty good but I watched it KNOWING that it wasn't supposed to be a movie based on anything of a christian basis, etc. I don't think I would find myself watching it over & over again, I just wanted to see how Sister Prejean's "case" turned out with this man that I had heard about with this book so many times & finally found myself watching about it & it was very saddening to see such people like this in the world but also to see people like these nuns who are willing to try & help them. Still think that movies like these should NOT be offered on christian cinema sites, that is a definite in my opinion also. As far as I am aware this is not a Christian film. It contains heavy doses of language and violence and I believe also some (crime related) nudity. It is about a nun who has conversations with a man condemned to die for his role in the savage sexual murder of a young lady and her boyfriend. Dead Man Walking - DVD Sort by:
