An exhilarating musical re-telling of the parables of Jesus.
The Gospels according to '60s hippie counterculture in a film version of the stage musical. Jesus' life and teachings are illustrated in storytelling and songs ("Day by Day") and New York City locations.
The film opens with youthful city dwellers from various walks of life dropping their activities to follow John the Baptist (David Haskell from the original New York production). They sing ("Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord") as he leads them into a fountain where they are (metaphorically) baptized. There they meet Jesus (Victor Garber). Frizzy hair and mime makeup aside, the handsome young Garber (Titanic, Annie) is convincing in his film debut. Once baptized, they follow him around various scenic New York locations, singing and acting out passages from the Scriptures.

This is original Jesus freak meets Broadway. It is well done with some really great songs including " Day by Day".
It also gives great messages from the Gospels. It is fun to watch and would be a wonderful film for children to see and have the Gospel elucidated to them in a fun way. I recommend it to all, esp. those who did not live through the Jesus freak days.

Even though this is an old movie (I'm 26 years old- I fall asleep during most movies made before 1983) I loved how they portrayed the closeness and intimacy shared among Christ and His disciples. In addition to a very colorful set, wardrobe and props, they used alot of older slapstick for the scenes- older like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, and The Three Stooges.

I love this show/movie/musical !!!
I own the DVD and CD and usually see the show live whenever I see that it is playing local.

I came to Christ when I saw World Wide Pictures' "Two A Penny". I was a young Christian when "Godspell" came out and I never forgot it. Now, 34 years later, I have rediscovered this entertaining, faithful retelling of the gospel of Matthew. Although dated and a bit corny, the message is presented through improvisational skits and pop music. The play and film were embraced by the secular community...and it's harshest critics were Christians themselves! See it and judge for yourself.
The musical number shot on the roof of the (at that time) newly completed World Trade Center is chilling and gives one pause to consider where we are and where we've come since 1973. I strongly recommend this to both secular and Christian audiences! Only negative comment: the resurrection is not presented clearly enough.
