A true frontier story of conflict and compassion

Based on the true story of notorious grave-robber Jean Baptiste, Redemption follows Sheriff Henry Heath on the western frontier in 1862. Heath has just buried his only child when he's assigned custody of Baptiste, an impoverished French immigrant who has robbed 300 graves of the recently deceased. Torn between his duty to the law and his own prejudice for his prisoner, Heath becomes Baptiste's only defense against the bloodthirsty contempt of the community and the brutal isolation of the inhospitable Antelope Island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake where Baptiste has been exiled.

Well, this was good in many ways but it was so slow moving throughout which did take away from the film. Story was sad to be sure. Some Christianity was filtered in. Really showed how humans demand their own justice in their own way. Sobering is a good word for this one

Redemption is a high quality film, with captivating music; which is based on the true story of Jean Baptiste, a grave robber. It does suffer, though, from poor editing, which causes the film to drag in places. It was originally titled For Robbing the Dead, but has been renamed twice - First to Redemption: For Robbing the Dead; then to, simply, Redemption. It was wonderful to see Rance Howard, who played the father in the 2006 film Aimee Semple McPherson (here he plays, simply, Doctor). Also of note was Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane in the 1978 version of Superman (here she plays Maryls Baptiste, mother of the protagonist, Jean). John Freeman, a real, Oregon cowboy, plays Henry Heath, the protagonist (and sheriff), who protects Jean. Enjoy!

Richard K: Because I believe in redemption Feb 5, 2013
Steve M asked: This is supposed to be a place to talk about this movie with others who've watched it. Do I need to ask a question here to be allowed these comments?

Beware! This is a Mormon movie about a famous Mormon pioneer and produced by Covenant Communications, a wholly-owned business of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. The film won recognition at the 12th annual LDS Film Festival. This is NOT about the struggles and victory of an evangelical Christian. It is yet another attempt by the Mormon church to present Mormonism as Christian, just another denomination among many, and in the process, make money for the church. Don't be taken in!

Patricia B: I really liked the movie. It was insightful about how we treat people when they are different. He committed a crime and was sentence punishment, this was not enough for some. It brings to mind that we are supposed to let God do the judging and not man. God is the only one who truly knows if we have repented, because He reads the hearts of men.

Richard K: Hi Steve,
I did not like the movie. It drags and seems inconsistent. I watched "Redemption" ... it is a Mormon film that dragged on from start to finish. Redemption offers little in spiritual value. If anything it kind of left you with a feeling redemption comes from helping others out when they need help... as the sheriff did to Baptiste. Christ or even God had little to do with what the film projected. I think they were advocating good works as pathway to faith, which is farthest from the truth. Without Christ there is no hope beyond this life entrusted to us here on earth. I would not recommend this film to anyone. It is simply boring, if you want my opinion. DID NOT LIKE IT
Sincerely, Dick Keezer

Richard K: I have not viewed the film yet. I am of Lutheran Faith (1st a Christian, believer in salvation through Christ's sacrificial death, burial and resurrection and ascension... and my religious views are somewhat different than the Mormon Faith. I would be glad to share with you what I personally think about this film, but only after having viewed it.
Will that help you in your evaluation?
Sincerely in Him,
Dick Keezer
