Sense and Sensibility, is one of our favorite films, being watched approximately every two years. We’ve even watched both Commentary tracks. Naturally, we’re big fans of Jane Austen; also viewing Persuasion, Emma, along with Pride and Prejudice, on a regular basis. Naturally, this is an adaptation, so do not expect everything to be exactly like the novel (though it does remain faithful to the major plot points). Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, and Alan Rickman are the four leading actors, and all are superb. Ang Lee directed this masterpiece, exercising a good deal of reserve, with none of the typical film devices usually employed to “jazz up” the emotional content (trust us, the emotional content is there, on a real basis). This said, the questions are: Will Emma and Hugh ever get together, while the same question applies to Kate and Alan - Of course, but you (probably) knew this before reading our review. We highly recommend you make this film, along with Emma, and Pride and Prejudice, into a family film festival. We like them in this order: Emma (the funniest in the group), Pride and Prejudice (the one employing typical dramatic directing), and Sense and Sensibility (the most faithful Jane Austen adaptation). (Lest we forget, the recommended Emma film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, while Pride and Prejudice stars Keira Knightly.) Finally, the technical specialists on this film do a wonderful job, making us feel that we are inside the time frame of Jane’s novel. Enjoy!
