Lori Loughlin might best be known for playing Rebecca Donaldson Katsopolis on Full House, but lately, she's been playing Abigail Stanton in both seasons of the television adaptation of Janette Oke's When Calls The Heart, available now on DVD. As she prepares for the third season of the show, Loughlin sat down with ChristianCinema.com to discuss the series, and her role on the upcoming Netflix series, Fuller House.
Loughlin's life is anything but slow. She is raising two teenage girls and a young adult stepson with her husband, and working on improving her golf handicap. But she's also a screenwriter, producer, and actor, so there is plenty to balance! With all that she has to keep track of, I asked her what makes When Calls The Heart so special?
"It's a pretty special show," Loughlin said. "The characters are endearing and it leaves the audience with a cliffhanger every week. I think there's something attractive about a period piece, too."
"One of the things I love about it is that even though it's set in the early 1900s, we get to tell stories that still feel contemporary."
So what can fans expect of the upcoming season?
"One of the things I've been interested in doing is exploring the possibility of Abigail having a child come into her life," Loughlin mused. "She's a widow, having lost her husband and her child. But there are a lot of single mothers out there, and this would give them something to relate to in the show."
With the spring release of Fuller House, bringing some of the old cast back together for a spin-off, what was the time between like?
"The cast really stayed in touch since the show ended," Loughlin shared. "When John Stamos called, he said they'd been seeing if someone could work it out, if a production company would pick it up. Netflix paid for thirteen episodes and I'm in three of them. I'm sure they'll pick it up for another season!"
Whether you know her for her sitcom charm or her coal town principles, it is clear that there is space for these stories, and an audience who wants to experience them. Loughlin is more than happy to make time to share them with you.
