The Robbins'-Mel (Joanna Kerns), Richard (Bruce Davison), Willy (Joe Mazzello) and Cassie (Reese Witherspoon)-are a typical, all-American family with regular, everyday worries. But they experience a whole new kind of apprehension when Cassie is diagnosed with leukemia and young brother Willy is the best match for a bone marrow transplant. However, Willy experienced a bad reaction to anesthesia during a previous surgery, so Mel is nervous about letting him be the donor. Her concern is driving the family apart...and putting Cassie's life in danger.
This is a movie which features an incredible performance by a very young Reese Witherspoon, who plays a teen girl named Cassie, a player on the Deer View football team and is close with her younger brother, Willie, and her father and stepmother. However, when she is diagnosed with leukemia her illness threatens to not only end her life but to tear the family apart. It seems that younger brother Willie is her best chance for survival, if he becomes a bone marrow donor. Cassie's father trusts the doctor that the odds are good and is ready to let Willie help out. However, Willie once had a close call following an accident in which he almost died during surgery and his mother refuses to agree to Willie becoming involved. The resulting turmoil fires up the dramatic elements in this film.
Due to several utterances of language and some sophisticated themes in the "other" category, we are recommending this movie for ages twelve plus but recommend it we do. This one will inspire you to appreciate your family even more.
