Synopsis: There is a land of two kingdoms, but only one true King. A living land, where foundations grow in trees and rivers sing and breathe. A dying land, where the darkness of a false prince threatens to swallow everything in its shadow.
Enter Between Two Kingdoms with Tommy, an eternally seven-year-old child of the Great King, as he and his friends accept the challenge of the Good Prince to live as grown men and women in the Lower Kingdom, where hope is hidden, vision is clouded, and pride twists truth into a beautiful yet deadly deception.
Enter the Kingdoms By definition, a fantasy is a story that takes place within a made-up world. That world has rules and traditions and it's little oddities, but they belong to that world. Boyd creates a couple of fantastical kingdoms that are easily imagined. He uses familiar scenes and places them in unusual settings to create worlds that are almost entirely believable.
There are magical moments where his descriptions seem to develop in the mind's eye almost effortlessly and you can picture clearly what he's trying to convey. Boyd's characterizations are excellent, and his concept of age representing innocence or loss of innocence is intriguing.
Children will relate to the story, as it is children who are the heroes and heroines of the tale, and since most children have vivid imaginations, they will probably be drawn immediately into the story. Adults may have a harder time, as sometimes the rules Boyd set up for his world were broken and created some confusion in the storyline.
Strong Symbolism There are very strong symbols throughout the book that relate directly to scripture, and that is the River as a life-giving force and the Tree as a place of dwelling and safety. Boyd also draws parallels to the beginning of man's story and the establishment of Christ's Kingdom on His return.
Read the story and let yourself be drawn into the fantasy. It may seem a little complex and convoluted, but the language is beautifully written and at the end, almost everything will be clear.
